Tree Sizing
(Caliper & Height)
In tree care, caliper refers to the diameter of a young tree's trunk, measured at 6-inches above the ground. Height is used to measure evergreen and multi-trunk trees instead of caliper. This measurement refers to the total height of the tree from the ground to the highest point. These measurements help determine the tree's size for planting and transplanting purposes.

Guide to Tree Sizes: Caliper, Height, & Weight
-
2" Caliper Trunk = 11' to '14' average height
-
2.5" Caliper Trunk = 12' to 15' average height
-
3" Caliper Trunk = 13' to 16' average height
-
3.5" Caliper Trunk = 14' to 18' average height
-
4" Caliper Trunk = 16' to 20' average height
-
4.5" Caliper Trunk = 18 to 22 average height
-
5" Caliper Trunk = 20 to 25 average height
Deciduous Trees (Single Trunk)
Deciduous trees are measured by caliper size, which refers to the trunk diameter. The larger the caliper, the bigger the root ball needed for successful planting.

Evergreen Trees
Evergreens are measured by height, and their root ball size increases with tree height to ensure proper transplanting.

Multi-Trunk Trees
Multi-trunk trees have multiple stems growing from the base, giving them a more natural, bushy appearance. They are measured by height.
